The second meeting of January began with festivities! Junior Firefighter Alex received a cake from Chief Lane and the rest of the firefighters!
After that, several firefighters were fitted for turnout gear, while others helped unpack the department’s new tables and chairs. The addition of these new tables and chairs will greatly expand seating for training nights and events!
Still other firefighters worked on equipment on the trucks which needed to be refreshed, filled, or charged after several calls since our last meeting.
Some of the topics discussed during the meeting included some of the lessons from structure fires such as cans of food exploding from the intense heat, problems during freezing temperatures from tools not working well or at all to contacting stores or the city if the water used to extinguish the fire is going to freeze on parking lots or city streets, and always treating powerlines like they are hot.
Assistant Chief Tim Freeman stressed Chief Lane’s consistent message, “YOU are our most important asset; equipment can be replaced, YOU can’t!”
The meeting also included a closed door session with firefighters involved in a very difficult accident they were called to which included a fatality. The department works together to deal with sensitive issues which could affect our firefighters mental health.
Coming up in March, several WFPD members will attend extrication training up in Lincoln at the Lincoln Community Fire District through the MU Fire and Rescue Training Institute.
We look forward to seeing everyone at our February meetings!
